Green tea extract is a staple of weight-management, antioxidant and heart-health supplements, and the active most buyers specify is EGCG. - EGCG 50%: economical, polyphenol-rich grade for blends where green tea is a supporting ingredient.
- EGCG 80-95%: the premium weight-management grade; a 400 mg EGCG serving needs only about 420-500 mg of powder at this strength.
- EGCG 98%: maximum density for small capsules, softgels and high-claim products, with the highest cost per kilogram but often the lowest cost per milligram of active.

Decaffeinated vs Standard Grades
Standard green tea extract naturally carries caffeine at roughly 2-8%, which is useful in energy and thermogenic formulas but a problem in sleep, evening or stimulant-free products. Decaffeinated grades reduce caffeine below 1% while preserving the catechin content. We supply decaf EGCG on request; specify your caffeine ceiling when requesting the specification sheet.
Safety and Dose Limits
Green tea catechins are safe in ordinary use, but concentrated EGCG has a documented risk at high doses. EFSA concluded that intakes of 800 mg or more of EGCG per day are associated with a signal of liver injury, and that an 800 mg supplement dose cannot be considered safe. Most commercial formulas stay at 200-400 mg EGCG per serving, and labels should advise against taking high-dose products on an empty stomach. Green tea extract begins with young tea leaves that are quickly steamed or pan-fired to preserve catechins. Decaffeinated grades take an extra step that removes caffeine below 1% while keeping the catechin content intact.
